VoIP users 'must be aware of security'
Businesses using VoIP networks have been advised to consider security issues.
According to ITproportal.com, VoIP is a technology with huge potential which needs to be effectively protected from security threats in order to continue its development.
The IT website states that VoIP is now "established as a mainstream IP application" and could in theory prompt "at least as great a change" to business technology as the shift in communications made possible by email.
However, it also notes that the issue of security for VoIP networks is given "comparatively little attention" alongside email and general web security.
By understanding the importance of secure VoIP applications, businesses have the power to boost their operations in a way which is comparable to the initial impact of email communication, the website states.
Writing on TMCnet.com earlier this month, Michelle Robart said that businesses using VoIP should check the security of their network before using it for services such as audio conferencing.
Commercial Director John Rees from Managed VoIP provider 8el commented "Choosing a VoIP service that operates over a private network connection, such as CallPort is by it's very nature more secure that a VoIP service based over the public Internet."
He continued "There are many steps you can take to ensure the security of your VoIP service from routing VoIP traffic through a SBC (Session Border Controller) rather than the Firewall, thus reducing the chance of a denial-of-service attack; to something as simple as changing your voicemail passwords."
