VoIP could be used as part of swine flu contingency plan
Small businesses have been urged to develop contingency strategies to cope with a possible acceleration in the spread of the swine flu virus.
The Guardian reports that while some firms have been putting plans in place to deal with disruption caused by the virus for some months, others are only just beginning to realise the seriousness of the situation.
It is thought that small firms in particular are poorly prepared, although Sophie Kummer, a spokesperson for the Federation of Small Businesses, believes there are many options open to them.
"There's lots of things they can do, for example make sure staff are able to work from home, and that people know how to communicate, and that they are aware when a contingency plan comes into place," she told the news provider.
Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions have been championed as a way to help businesses facilitate flexible working practices such as homeworking as the technology can improve communication links between an office and remote workers.
Business Link suggests employers should encourage their employees to always carry tissues and regularly wash their hands with soap and hot water in order to reduce the risk of infection.
