VoIP technology set to shake up mobile market
Mobile phone operators are expected to lose a sizeable amount of their voice revenue to the growth of VoIP services, a new report has stated.
According to research from Gartner, wireless VoIP is already moving in on the traditional revenue streams of mobile network operators, despite their efforts to adapt to the technology.
The analyst firm has predicted that the widespread adoption of mobile VoIP calls will speed up once 4G mobile networks are fully established, although this may not happen until 2017.
"In ten years' time we expect that 30 per cent of mobile voice traffic will be carried out through third-party mobile portals, such as Google, Facebook, MySpace and Yahoo, which will adopt wireless VoIP service as a voice option to their current communications hub," explained Tole Hart, research director at Gartner.
Akshay Sharma, another of the firm's research directors, added: "Carriers will adopt voice services because of the increased capacity and reduced cost of delivering voice over 4G networks."
Thomas Newton of Mobile-Phones.co.uk recently claimed that network providers face a "catch-22 situation" over the emergence of mobile VoIP calling.
