VoIP sector 'to be worth £13.5bn by 2010'

VoIP sector 'to be worth £13.5bn by 2010'A growth in the number of mergers and acquisitions in the telecommunications sector and the increasing enthusiasm with which businesses embrace technology are likely to lead to voice over-IP (VoIP) services generating £13.5 billion in global revenues by 2010.

That is the prediction of the financial advisory firm Grant Thornton, which believes that the growth which has seen the number of VoIP subscribers double from 2006 is likely to continue over the next few years.

According to the analysts' head of technology, Sarika Patel, customer numbers are likely to hit 250 million across the world within the next two years as the sector benefits from smaller telecoms providers merging together or being acquired by industry leaders.

"VoIP is no longer next generation telephony, it is here now, and 2008 should see strategic acquisitions of independent software developers and ISPs by large telcos looking to consolidate their VoIP offerings," she explained.

At the same time, Network Performance Daily has revealed that VoIP may be turned to as an alternative solution to the problem of rolling out broadband internet solutions to rural areas, thereby further boosting the number of global subscribers.
