VoIP on mobiles will 'undercut mobile tariffs'
Mobile Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call costs will undercut mobile phone operators' tariffs, according to a report from Fitch Ratings.
The study showed that VoIP phone calls taken through a mobile network cost 15 times less than a 3G mobile phone call.
According to Fitch, VoIP will be in high demand because of the low cost of phone calls.
It will also be popular for people who want to avoid expensive international roaming charges when they are abroad.
But the report showed that 3G VoIP was unpredictable as the web coverage needed for it from the network was poor.
However, this was expected to change in the future as handsets become more up-to-date and web technology is improved.
According to Fitch, in the long-term, mobile phone operators are likely to design their own VoIP applications for phones but currently users must download the software.
Nielson reported earlier this month that an increasing number of people are accessing the internet with their mobile phones.
In the last year, this number has grown by 14.4 million.
