Mobile networks face struggle to contain VoIP growth

Mobile networks face struggle to contain VoIP growthThe rapid growth of VoIP services will challenge the existence of many mobile phone network providers, an industry expert has claimed.

Thomas Newton of Mobile-Phones.co.uk said that companies such as T-Mobile and Vodafone have been facing "a real catch-22 situation" since the emergence of VoIP calling on mobile networks, which threatens to severely undermine their main source of revenue.

He explained that network providers could adapt to the technology by developing their own VoIP client, but would still risk losing money on calls being made in the conventional way.

"It's a real damned if you do, damned if you don't-type scenario," Mr Newton commented.

"There really isn't any way they can adapt to survive it [VoIP], as it undermines the real bread and butter of the networks - the money they make from traditional cellular voice calls," he added.

The development of Mobile VoIP and its emergence as a business tool is set to be one of the main topics on the agenda at the Wireless & Mobile 09 event, which takes place at London's Olympia next month.
