Local authority plans switch to VoIP
Birmingham City Council is preparing to update its telephony system with the deployment of VoIP technology.
Next week, the local authority's cabinet members will vote on a plan to install 17,000 new VoIP phones at various council premises across Birmingham.
Supporters of the £5 million project say that it will enable council staff to work more flexibly when moving between different sites, as well as generating savings of approximately £867,000 by 2018.
"The rapid rate at which technology has evolved means we are now able to introduce a telephony system that is very simple yet massively effective," explained councillor Paul Tilsley, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council.
"Our existing equipment doesn't let staff carry out their work easily from several locations, which ultimately affects the way they serve citizens and therefore the overall quality of everything we do," he added.
According to recent estimates from TeleGeography, the number of VoIP lines in Europe exceeded 35 million at the end of 2008.
