Employees 'want to be allowed to work from home'

Employees 'want to be allowed to work from home'A new report has suggested that many workers in the UK would be happier if they were allowed to work from home.

The rise of technology such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and faster broadband connections have made it easier for office workers to successfully operate from their own home.

However, a new survey from Plantronics showed that three quarters of employees were in jobs that offered no flexible working options. This is despite the fact that two thirds of staff said they thought they would be happier and more productive if they could work from home, the Press Association reported.

What's more, the research showed that the number of people working from home has increased by just a fifth in the past decade, despite the rise of VoIP systems in this period.

"The suspicion that home workers don't work as hard or waste time is very old-fashioned," Paul Clark, general manager of Plantronics, told the news agency.

"Our research shows home workers are more likely to work smarter and multi-task more."

However, a recent survey from broadbandchoices.com showed that nearly 1.5 million households in the UK still used dial-up internet connections, meaning they would not be able to use technologies such as VoIP if they worked from home.
