Economic downturn 'spurring VoIP growth'

Economic downturn 'spurring VoIP growth'The bleak economic outlook will prompt more businesses to adopt VoIP networks as a cost saving strategy, an expert has claimed.

Don Witt, president of cyLogistics, told tmcnet.com that the likelihood of a prolonged recession is set to inspire a large number of organisations to "take the digital/VoIP plunge".

He believes that the increased demand for VoIP services could be so great that sales will increase by "200 to 300 per cent" over pre-downturn forecasts, with many business leaders viewing VoIP as the best way to cut expenditure in the office.

"More and more executives will be under the gun to cut costs... As a result, VoIP sales will increase significantly over the next year or two," Mr Witt explains.

According to tmcnet.com, the use of VoIP is not only on the rise in the business world, but is also experiencing an upturn among "municipalities and schools".

As an example, the technology portal cites the town of Enfield in Connecticut, which recently linked its schools and municipal infrastructure with a new VoIP network.

In the UK, chief executive of Becta Stephen Crowne recently explained the potential benefits of VoIP as a tool for learning in the classroom.
