Virtualisation 'boosts security and performance'

Virtualisation 'boosts security and performance'Businesses looking to boost the security of their network operations while making them more efficient should consider virtualisation, according to industry experts.

An article from Computerweekly.com states that improved security and performance are the two principal benefits of virtual local area networks (Vlans) - the most common type of virtualisation technique.

Malcolm Price, technical director of network training and consulting firm LanBase Technologies, told the website that networks are much less vulnerable to security threats following virtualisation.

"It makes it much harder for a would-be hacker to exploit traffic streams because they would need to sniff specific local area network ports and not just target any switch," he explained.

Meanwhile, technical marketing engineer at Cisco Pierre Emmanuel-Ettori said that Vlans can boost performance because their original function was to prevent broadcast storms on large networks.

After a recent update of his organisation's IT infrastructure, IT Manager at Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trusts Russell Hornshaw described virtualisation as "a very robust and cost-effective way of running our IT systems".
