Apprentice star joins rural broadband campaign

Apprentice star joins rural broadband campaignClaire Young, a former contestant on BBC1's The Apprentice, has backed the campaign to bring next-generation broadband to rural businesses.

The 30-year-old businesswoman, who finished as runner-up on last year's series of the popular reality TV show, is supporting the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) in its attempt to raise awareness of rural broadband needs.

"Having started a new business after The Apprentice, I have first-hand experience of how crucial good broadband access is for success," she commented.

"I have relocated from London to a rural area and discovered the frustrations of poor broadband access."

Ms Young set up a wedding venue company based in Daventry, Northamptonshire, following her appearance on The Apprentice.

The CLA has claimed that enterprises in rural parts of the UK are at risk of becoming severely disadvantaged as high-speed broadband becomes more widely available in urban areas.

A recent report from Ofcom revealed that customers subscribing to 'up to' 8Mbps packages with internet service providers in Northern Ireland can access average speeds of 4.1Mbps - the highest in the UK for this kind of service.
