Next-generation broadband 'can aid' business internet solutions
Business internet solutions can be aided by next-generation broadband, but an expert has questioned how consumer and company take up will be driven.
Roger Darlington, member for England at the Communications Consumer Panel and the chairman of the Westminster eForum keynote seminar the Future of Broadband in the UK, said the crucial question regarded how the networks would be utilised when they were in place.
He added that the main theme of the Westminster eForum was where to go next in terms of broadband.
The eForum, which took place earlier this week, questioned whether the government should subsidise high-speed internet access when it has no clearly defined use.
It also discussed if the government should pay for high-speed deployment.
Mr Darlington remarked that the UK fell short of a "broadband-enabled nation".
"A quarter of homes in this country are still not connected to the net at any speed," he added.
The Times reported earlier this month that a controversial £6 tax on phone lines, to fund high-speed connections, would make two million householders pay up to three times the levy that was initially proposed by ministers.
