City-wide area network shows "forward-thinking attitude"

City-wide area network shows A local area network being introduced by Swindon Borough Council demonstrates "a forward-thinking attitude", it has been claimed.

Broadband Genie praised the city-wide Wi-Fi scheme announced by the local authority last week.

The project is funded by a combination of private and public sources and there are plans to charge a small fee for those requiring greater bandwidth.

Commenting on the venture, editor of Broadband Genie Chris Marling said both businesses and consumers appreciate the value of mobile broadband services, although there are limitations.

He added: "It is great to see a council with a forward-thinking attitude acting on its instincts."

Mr Marling concluded that the new service is a step in the right direction as it will give people in Swindon another option when it comes to their broadband needs.

The first phase of the city-wide area network is due to be switched on early next month, with the remainder scheduled for completion by April 2010.
