Businesses warned over wireless network security

Businesses warned over wireless network securityMany UK businesses are not conscious of the threats posed by an unsecured wireless local area network (WLAN), according to industry expert.

Amit Sinha, fellow and chief technologist at Motorola Enterprise Mobility, said that a lack of awareness is the main reason for security problems occurring in wireless business networks.

He suggested that the recession could lead to a growing number of WLAN security threats, with many firms forced to cut costs and impose budget restrictions on their IT infrastructure.

"Many companies do not realise how vulnerable their wireless networks are," Mr Sinha explained.

"They do not realise that there are misconfigurations in their WLAN, rogue WLAN devices and poor policy enforcement."

According to recent research from Motorola Enterprise Mobility, 64 per cent of companies neglect their WLAN security, with only 30 per cent using any form of wireless intrusion prevention system.

David Emms, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, recently urged people to use more "common sense" when planning an online security strategy.
