UC 'set for growth in 2009'

UC 'set for growth in 2009'The new year will provide an opportunity for companies to improve their operations by implementing a system of unified communications (UC), an expert has claimed.

Writing on cnet.com, Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Jon Oltsik explains that UC represents an increasingly viable solution to a clear problem - "we are all communicating with each other using a half dozen or so independent technologies".

He says that 2009 could be the year when enterprises take advantage of a UC platform to combine their telecommunications services, thereby becoming more efficient and boosting performance.

"There is a great opportunity to integrate UC into business processes to improve efficiency and service," Mr Oltsik comments.

He also predicts that video conferencing will be adopted by more businesses as a way of reducing costs next year, with firms looking to boost their "telepresence" as they adapt to changing market conditions.

"The use of video conferencing should grow as companies restrict employee travel and equipment prices plummet," the analyst states.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, recently highlighted VoIP as a key growth area for the telecoms industry in 2009.
