Teleworking 'to benefit' employees during 2010 Olympics
Technology such as audio and video conferencing, laptops and virtual private networks will help hundreds of employees avoid heavy traffic during the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Metro News reported that a number of organisations - including the Vancouver School Board and telecoms giant Telus, which employs 1,000 people in Vancouver's city centre - are considering their options when it comes to allowing their staff to work flexibly from home.
Shawn Hall, a spokesman for Telus, said that once the technology is in place, "a few hundred cars" could be taken off the roads during the two-week international event.
He said that the firm already has the necessary measures in place to implement the teleworking programme, but it would not be difficult for other companies to follow Telus' lead and allow their staff to work from home.
With fewer than 100 days to go before the winter Olympics in Vancouver, residents of the city have already seen parking restrictions come into place in urban areas, as well as residential neighbourhoods, according to the Vancouver Sun.
The main event is set to take place from February 12th to 28th next year, with the Paralympic Games to follow from March 12th to 21st.
