Technology provides opportunity for flexible working
The development of communications technology is giving UK businesses more scope to introduce flexible working, an industry expert has claimed.
Stephen Benyon, managing director of ntl:Telewest Business, explains that the length of time employees spend in the office is no longer the "key measure of productivity" for enterprises.
Writing on computerweekly.com, he says that the availability of better computer systems, faster broadband connections and advanced telecoms services has made the "virtual office" concept increasingly widespread.
Commenting on the expansion of high-speed broadband, Mr Benyon states: "This has significantly reduced the cost to business of setting up homeworking programmes, and with virtual private networks in place, it is comparatively simple and safe."
He also explains that flexible working is set to become even more established as more people with higher expectations of technology enter the workforce.
"For this generation of workers, VoIP, videoconferencing and workplace instant messaging are not novelties but necessities," he remarks.
Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses John Wright recently described flexible working as a "useful tool" for small firms looking to make cost savings.
