Technology 'has made working more flexible' in Wales

Technology 'has made working more flexible' in WalesWelsh workers have better access to flexible working hours thanks to technology, according to a senior partner at a Cardiff solicitors firm.

Adrian Oliver told the Western Mail's Tim Lewis that changes in working practices over the last ten years mean that he is now more accessible to his clients when he is out of the office.

"In the 1990s remote working wasn't as popular as it is now. If a client didn't catch you before you left the office at 6pm, they would have to wait," he said.

Mr Oliver added that the technology was not in place to "keep in touch the way we do now" and that an increase in flexi-work and part time working has caused his own hours to increase, as he now manages people who work at non-traditional times.

This statement was echoed by recent figures from the Office for National Statistics which indicated that communication technologies - including more advanced mobile phones and out-of-hours access to email - have made it easier for people to telework.

Mobile Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology could be one business internet solution that could benefit firms in the coming years.

New figures from In-Stat published this month indicate that there will be 287 million people using mobile VoIP technology worldwide by 2013.
