Super-fast broadband 'could unleash other technologies'
A spokesperson for the British Computer Society (BCS) has claimed that the delivery of next-generation broadband will have major implications for other technologies in the UK.
David Evans, who represents government relations at the BCS, said that ensuring universal access to fibre optic broadband connections could "rival the engineering feats of our ancestors".
Speaking at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum seminar on Digital Britain, he claimed that a super-fast broadband network has the potential to "take some other technologies off the leash", with new opportunities in areas such as cloud computing and telecommunications.
Mr Evans also compared the development of a next-generation broadband network to the major advancements of the Victorian era, such as the national railway system.
"It would be madness to speculate on bandwidth requirements in 100 years' time, but it is at least conceivable that optical fibre from today could still be put to good use into the next century," he explained.
Speaking in December, MP and Parliamentary Information Technology Committee member Nick Palmer said that demand for super-fast broadband will be high among British consumers and businesses.
