SMBs are 'not prepared for disaster recovery'
Disaster recovery is vital for any business, but research from Symantec has shown that small and midsize businesses (SMB) are "unprepared".
According to the 2009 SMB Disaster Preparedness survey by Symantec, many SMBs will lose business as a direct result of not preparing for disasters.
"They often run lean and forgo basic protections against business risks due to lack of time, budget and staff resources," the report stated.
When faced with the question of the aftermath of a disaster such as a fire, two-thirds of SMBs said that their customers would wait patiently for systems to be back in place.
But the research revealed that one-third of customers would visit other vendors as if a business's computer systems were hit by a disaster.
The average SMB was found to only back up 60 per cent of its data and just one-fifth does this each day.
Of the SMBs questioned, 55 per cent remarked that they would lose almost half of their customer data if there was a fire.
According to disaster-recovery-guide.com, businesses should have a disaster recovery plan and they should back up data and plan a development project.
