Small businesses 'have options' for disaster recovery

Small businesses 'have options' for disaster recoverySmall and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a number of available options when creating a disaster recovery plan.

This is according to Simon Kelson of Atlanta Technology, who believes that SMEs must retain "an emphasis on cash management" when formulating their recovery strategies in order to avoid needless expense.

Writing on freshbusinessthinking.com, Mr Kelson explains that continuous data protection, virtualisation and cloud computing are the main options for continuity plans in the modern business environment.

He comments:"Data replication and communication between sites generally accounts for 30 per cent of all recurring disaster recovery costs.

"Therefore, replication should be optimised to minimise bandwidth requirements and reduce the overall cost of disaster recovery."

Virtualisation of servers and storage systems enables businesses to significantly reduce the cost of their backup, while also providing firms with access to virtual copies of failed systems in the event of a crisis.

Mr Kelson explains that outsourcing continuity plans via the cloud can help SMEs because it means that "budgeting for disaster recovery becomes an operational expense, rather than capital expense".

A recent survey from Symantec found that 70 per cent of senior executives are now involved in the production of disaster recovery plans, compared with just 33 per cent last year.

Justin Hamilton-Martin, managing director of 8el explains why Disaster Recovery plans for telephony is also important: "Disaster Recovery is vital to any organisation however business continuity planning works on the 'root cause' and avoidance issues rather than the effect of an outage. A consolidated plan dealing with the effects on both voice and data services generally leads to a more robust business.

"IP Centrex, similar to virtualisation for data services, enables a more reliable way of working telephony working. If a site is lost for then alternative sites can be hot-desked, without affecting the way a business manages inbound telephony communications. Whilst data applications are important, very few businesses can pull off a disaster situation without careful planning around their telephony services."
