Rural businesses 'neglected by next-gen broadband plans'
Concerns that rural businesses could suffer as a result of Ofcom's decision to deregulate the development of a super-fast broadband network have been raised by the Country Land & Business Association (CLA).
Earlier this week, Ofcom announced that BT will face no regulatory barriers with its plan to develop a next-generation network of fibre optic broadband in the UK.
However, the CLA has warned that the regulator's approach could be harmful to businesses in rural areas.
Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, president of the CLA, said that Ofcom had "failed to understand the needs of rural communities".
"The practical effect of deregulating broadband will be to create such a gulf between rural and urban areas that the rural economy could find itself on its knees very soon," he added.
Mr Aubrey-Fletcher also said that the country's rural businesses have "a fundamental part to play in the recovery of the economy".
BT hopes to bring its next-generation broadband network to about ten million homes and businesses in the UK by 2012.
