Next-generation broadband 'will boost UK business'
The government's plan to make super-fast broadband speeds widely available will ensure that British firms remain competitive in the global economy, an industry expert has claimed.
Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said that the rollout of a next-generation broadband network is likely to have an immediate impact for business users, whereas the initial benefits for consumers will be less pronounced.
He claimed that the ability to transfer more data at faster speeds should enable UK businesses to compete with their rivals for major contracts.
"Having a high-speed internet network which takes larger transfers of data means we can work on larger projects and larger projects tend to have larger revenues attached to them," Mr Phillips explained.
He also predicted that the next generation of broadband services will become an essential part of the UK economy in future years.
"Britain is an information and service economy, and internet connectivity is now at the heart of that," he added.
Due to comments made by prime minister Gordon Brown and business secretary Lord Mandelson at last week's Digital Britain summit, industry figures have speculated that financial support for the broadband industry could be included in the Budget on Wednesday (April 22nd).
