IT chiefs becoming hands-on with disaster recovery planning
Growing numbers of business leaders are adopting a hands-on approach to disaster recovery planning as they come to recognise the importance of guarding against unforeseen events.
New research has revealed that 67 per cent of companies now bring their chief information officer on board when drawing up and implementing disaster recovery plans.
This compares with just 33 per cent in 2008, with the company that carried out the study, Symantec, putting this trend down to the fact that business leaders are growing increasingly concerned about the potential threats to data from malicious hackers or natural disasters.
Despite this, the research also found that a majority of UK organisations still lack a dedicated executive to deal with disaster recovery, while of those companies that tested their plans last year, one in four experienced significant problems.
Commenting on the findings, Darren Thomson, Symantec's senior technology director, said: "It indicates perhaps that people are not taking disaster recovery as seriously as they should.
"It's an industry maturity thing which will get better."
News of the findings come soon after the Conservative party hinted that it may consider allowing NHS data to be stored by private companies should it win the next election.
