Flexible working law puts focus on technology

Flexible working law puts focus on technologyNew working legislation is set to place a greater emphasis on IT infrastructure for businesses, with many more parents given the right to request flexible hours.

Under the government's new flexible working provision, an additional 4.5 million people will be able to ask their employer to implement family-friendly working arrangements.

The right to request flexible working was previously available to parents with children under six, but new legislation has extended it to those with children up to the age of 16 from Monday (April 6th).

Responding to the change, vnunet.com suggested that an increased demand for flexible working will thrust business IT systems and telecoms networks into the spotlight.

Andrew Millard, director of ecommerce at Citrix Online, told the website that businesses should view the new law as a stimulating challenge rather than a problem.

"With technologies now in place to help companies mobilise a remote workforce quickly and easily... this latest announcement gives businesses an opportunity to drive efficiencies into their operation, while increasing staff morale, retention and productivity levels," he explained.

VoIP networks can support a flexible working policy by providing the infrastructure for home offices and phone conferencing.
