Flexible working 'requires innovative technology'

Flexible working 'requires innovative technology'Businesses have been advised to update their IT infrastructure before the implementation of flexible working strategies.

With many firms looking for new ways to cut costs during the recession, reducing office hours and setting up employees to work remotely has emerged as an attractive option for companies feeling the pinch.

However, Adecco recruitment director Susan Yallop told Management Today that the success of a flexible working policy will often depend on the use of technology.

She explained: "To make the most of flexible working, staff have to have access to the technology and resources that will allow them to continue with business as usual, even if they're away from their desks.

"Take stock of the different roles within the organisation, assess who needs what to do what and match any technology purchases to role-specific requirements."

A recent report from analyst firm Frost & Sullivan revealed that an increase in "worker mobility and flexibility" is driving demand for new technologies such as VoIP telephony and video conferencing.
