Flexible working 'taking on new role'
Flexible working is becoming more important to businesses as the economic outlook continues to deteriorate, it has been claimed.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said that flexible working has "taken on a different role during the recession" and is no longer viewed as simply a way to improve the lifestyle of employees.
Instead, a growing number of businesses are beginning to understand how technology such as VoIP can be used to create flexible working strategies which save money and boost productivity.
"While the work-life balance merits remain important, [flexible working] can also be a way of reducing costs and improving efficiency for organisations facing the financial strain," Mr Barber explained.
"Smarter working improves productivity and businesses could further reduce costs by encouraging working from home."
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has praised UK companies for using communications technology to implement flexible working strategies during the recent weather disruption.
Some businesses also viewed the heavy snowfalls as an opportunity to test their disaster recovery plans.
