Fastest broadband speeds found in Northern Ireland
People subscribing to 'up to' 8Mbps broadband packages in Northern Ireland enjoy faster download speeds than the rest of the UK, Ofcom has revealed.
A study by the telecoms regulator found that the average speed for such packages in Northern Ireland was 4.1Mbps, compared with a UK average of 3.9Mbps.
Publishing its research into broadband services, Ofcom stated that "speed has become more significant as people increasingly use the internet for bandwidth-hungry applications such as downloading video and audio", with next-generation applications such as VoIP also becoming popular among broadband users.
The regulator noted that superior electrical line quality is likely to support faster speeds in Northern Ireland, although it also pointed out that the findings have an error margin of up to 0.4Mbps.
"It is very encouraging that some people here are enjoying the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, but we know that there are still parts of Northern Ireland, particularly rural areas, where speeds are much slower," commented Ofcom's Northern Ireland director Denis Wolinski.
Last December, Ofcom unveiled a voluntary code of practice for internet service providers, with the aim of giving broadband users more accurate information on the speeds they can expect from their service.
