Employers 'need to raise awareness of remote working benefits'

Employers 'need to raise awareness of remote working benefits'A significant proportion of UK professionals are still unaware that they may be entitled to make use of recent advances in online communications and work from home.

That is according to new research carried out by the Government Equalities Office, which found that 82 per cent of those professionals polled were not aware that, if they are caring for a spouse or family member, they are legally entitled to ask their employer for flexible hours.

The research, which was carried out by ICM for the government department, found that one in three workers could be entitled to such benefits, with developments in fields such as VoIP telephony meaning that employers will not have to lose out in terms of productivity.

Commenting on the findings, Imelda Redmond, chief executive of Carers UK, urged employers to do more to make use of communications technology such as VoIP so as to boost flexible working practices.

"Businesses need people to make the most of their skills and experience in the workplace, yet millions of people are at risk of having to leave their jobs because of caring responsibilities and a lack of support," she warned.

Last week, a study carried out by Citrix found that 85 per cent of UK businesses have stepped up their investment in remote working technology as they look to boost productivity levels.
