Digital Britain broadband proposals criticised
Plans outlined in the Digital Britain infrastructure initiative have been faulted by an expert who has argued that UK businesses need faster networks.
Writing on the Sky News website, Ted Higase of Global Crossing said that businesses with remote workers need speeds of more than two megabits per second to function effectively, therefore the focus should be on gigabits and not megabits.
The Digital Britain report made increased broadband speeds one of its main priorities in improving web services such as VoIP, which can help businesses make low cost calls via the internet.
However, Mr Higase said that for the proposals to succeed, the initiative needs to focus on more than boosting broadband speeds.
"While I don't doubt the claims and beliefs that increased broadband speeds will play an important part in helping UK businesses, it's essential that the correct infrastructure is put in place," he wrote.
This will "ensure businesses avoid issues around quality of service and, in the worst-case scenario, service drop outs".
Other issues outlined in the Digital Britain report include improving digital participation and upgrading digital radio by the end of 2015.
