Businesses advised to test disaster recovery plans
An industry expert has urged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to make sure their disaster recovery plans work in practice.
David Kelleher, communications and research analyst at GFI Software, told computerweekly.com that small firms should not spend time and money on the development of a disaster recovery strategy without putting it to the test.
He claimed that carrying out a simulation to ensure that a disaster recovery plan can deliver when required is a "critical step in security".
By artificially creating a situation that requires the use of back-ups, SMEs should be able to test their continuity strategies and gain an understanding of how a real disaster would impact on their operations.
"A disaster recovery plan that fails when put into practice is just another disaster," Mr Kelleher stated.
His tips were provided as part of the Infosecurity Europe event, which takes place at Earls Court in London from Tuesday April 28th to Thursday April 30th.
Former home secretary David Blunkett will give the opening address on Tuesday, discussing the role of government in dealing with information security threats.
