Broadband speeds 'letting down small businesses'

Broadband speeds 'letting down small businesses'The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has accused the government of failing the nation's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with its plans for universal broadband speeds.

According to the Digital Britain report, every home and business in the UK will have access to a broadband service of at least 2Mbps by 2012, but the FSB believes this commitment does not go far enough.

John Wright, the organisation's national chairman, claimed that the government is in "a time-warp" and urged ministers to take "bolder action" over next-generation broadband networks.

He said: "More than half of small businesses rely on the internet for up to 50 per cent of their annual turnover, yet simple tasks such as emailing, marketing, buying and selling are time-consuming because their broadband speeds are letting them down.

"The government needs to step up and take the country into a future when UK businesses are internationally competitive."

Lord Carter's Digital Britain report has also been criticised by Richard Heap, head of telecommunications at BDO Stoy Hayward, who claimed that the broadband commitment will "provide the UK with outdated technology at a speed akin to a snail's pace".
