Awareness of disaster recovery 'growing among businesses'
Business organisations are becoming more aware of the importance of disaster recovery business continuity plans, it has been claimed.
The ZDNet Asia website asked several industry experts for their views on disaster recovery among Asian operators, with Symantec's Andy Ng claiming that awareness of recovery strategies is now high among businesses in the region.
According to Mr Ng, the top three issues for companies formulating disaster recovery plans are the threat of virus and malware attacks, the fear of losing customer data and the possibility of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, Ovum principal analyst Graham Titterington told ZDNet Asia that preparing for outages and other common technical problems is just as important as planning for a major catastrophe.
"People tend to overestimate the likelihood of rare but serious threats, while underestimating the rate of occurrence of more normal events that still have a serious impact on their businesses," he explained.
Mr Ng said that inadequate testing can often render a disaster recovery plan ineffective, even if it has been carefully formulated.
Last month, computerweekly.com stated that the G20 protests in London would give IT departments in the City an opportunity to test their disaster recovery plans.
