8el announces the CallPort Unified Messaging feature is now fully compatible with Blackberry handheld devices
As part of the CallPort platform, 8el provides a voicemail system that incorporates Unified Messaging. A feature of this voicemail service is that messages can be included in an email as an attachment, so that CallPort users can listen to their messages on the move - providing true mobility.
These voicemail messages were originally provided as a Windows Wave File (.WMA). Due to limitations on the Blackberry devices, .WMA files are not supported. In order to ensure that our customers using Blackberry devices can benefit from this Unified Messaging service, 8el has now upgraded the platform to be fully compatible.
Due to the time it would take Blackberry's to download the .WMA files, a new low bandwidth codec was needed, so that customers could open messages directly from their email. 8el decided upon the MP3 codec (using a sampling speed of 16khz) as this was the lowest sampling rate and therefore bandwidth, that the Blackberry could support.
