999 Emergency calls through the 8el network

999 calls through 8el network

Reading, 28th May 2009 -- 8el has now enabled emergency services access through its core network which is an essential safety addition for users. Whilst local breakout has been used to date, especially on larger sites, calls can now be made directly from any handset using 8el's CallPort service.

Hot desking on the platform enables logged in users to make and receive calls from whichever handset or location they are using, however 999 calls can be made from any handset regardless of the login status, which is a key safety feature 8el's CallPort platform.

8el holds and maintains a database to inform the emergency services of the physical location being used by direct dial numbers allocated to the CallPort platform. Whilst the onus is on the customer to inform 8el of the typical location of the user, a code is presented to the emergency services for all CallPort numbers to highlight that the call may be originating from a different physical location to the one registered.

Justin Hamilton-Martin, Managing Director of 8el states "This location database and 999 compliance is both a logical and regulatory requirement for VoIP users and we are delighted to have enabled this essential capability to our network"
